CALIFORNIA REFERENCES

California Wage Orders 1-15.
California Wage Order 16 (construction and related industries).
California has industry-specific wage and hour rules that are contained in different sets of regulations known as "wage orders." The wage orders are issued by the IWC (see below), whose members are appointed by the governor. The particular wage order that applies to you depends on your industry and/or the occupations of your employees.

California Labor Code.
The Labor Code contains wage, hour and working condition rules pertaining to California employees.

California Employment Development Department (EDD).
The EDD collects employment taxes, including unemployment insurance, disability insurance and individual quarterly tax deposits. This section of the EDD Web site contains information specifically for employers on employment tax, unemployment and disability insurance, and more.

California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH).
The DFEH enforces California's anti-discrimination laws.

California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR).
The DIR enforces the majority of California's labor laws. It consists of several subordinate agencies, listed below:

California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA).
Cal/OSHA enforces the California Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE).
The DLSE enforces California wage and hour laws.

Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC).
The DWC enforces and administers workers' compensation laws.

Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC).
The IWC establishes wage orders containing minimum wage and work rules for private employers in California. See California Wage Orders.

FEDERAL REFERENCES

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) .
The EEOC enforces federal anti-discrimination laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. This section of the EEOC Web site focuses on discrimination and harassment.

U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) .
The DOL enforces various federal employment laws. It is made up of various subordinate agencies that are listed below:

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) .
OSHA enforces the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) .
The EBSA enforces the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Combined Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

U.S. Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).
The OFCCP conducts compliance reviews of federal contractors relating to affirmative action plans, the Rehabilitation Act, Executive Order 11246 and the Vietman-Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act.

Wage and Hour Division, Employment Standards Administration.
The Wage and Hour Division enforces the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Polygraph Protection Act and other federal wage and hour laws.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) .
The BLS compiles information on wages and the Consumer Price Index.

Employment and Training Administration (ETA) .
The ETA enforces the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).

U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Civil Rights Division, Office of Special Counsel .
This office enforces the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). This web site provides information on employment verification and nondiscrimination obligations under IRCA, and includes an I-9 form.

U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) .

U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
The NLRB investigates and hears complaints regarding unfair labor practices.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
NIOSH conducts studies, evaluates and makes recommendations on occupational health and safety issues.
